    Patient Education

    • Information Provided: Diabetes Australia fact sheet on SGLT2 inhibitors; Arthritis Australia "Gout and Diet" patient handout
    • Counseling Given: Discussed mechanism and side effects of empagliflozin, specifically mycotic genital infections, UTI risk, and euglycaemic DKA ("sick day" management: withhold if acutely unwell, vomiting, or fasting for surgery). Explained rationale for starting allopurinol at low dose with colchicine cover to prevent flare-ups, and not to cease allopurinol if an acute flare occurs.
    • Follow-up Instructions: Monitor home BP twice daily for 1 week prior to next visit. Present to clinic or urgent care immediately if experiencing severe dizziness, signs of DKA (nausea, abdominal pain, tachypnoea), or widespread skin rash after starting allopurinol.
